| Purpose |
|
To introduce or remind Year 7 students of Mackay
West State School of the services available to them at Mackay Libraries,
with particular reference to online resources.
|
| Scope |
|
As
primary school students enter Years 7 and 8, they are beginning to
experience higher demands from their teachers in the information they
produce for school assignments. They are also beginning to construct
bibliographies and understand the significance of referencing. It is
important that these students have the skills to determine that their
information sources are current, authoritative, and relevant to their
information needs.

To this end, the Information Services Assistant
visited Mackay West State School and conducted a 45 minute session to
each of the four Year 7 classes over two days. (October 30 and 31,
2006). Technical equipment, Internet access PC and data projector, were
supplied by MWSS.
During the session the ISA:
 |
Gave a brief tour of the Mackay Libraries website,
www.mackaylibraries.com.au, with
particular reference to the sites the students would find
interesting and useful such as
Young Adults,
Cool Websites,
Booklists and
Homework Help. |
 |
Demonstrated searching on the
WebOpac and provided information on
renewing and reserving online. |
 |
Demonstrated how to access the
SLQ Online Databases and how to search
Encyclopaedia Britannica Online. |
 |
Demonstrated
Google Suggest as an aid to finding
suitable keyword search terms and assist with spelling. |
 |
Demonstrated the “site:Google” tool to determine currency and scope
of a website. |
 |
Explained the concept of the “Information Age” and the importance of
research skills to navigate the Information Superhighway. |
Emphasis was placed on Encyclopaedia Britannica
Online as it contains information most suitable to this age group and
information needs. Other online databases available were mentioned, and
detailed further in the Digging into Databases booklet, as future tools
as their studies into high school progressed.
To assist in demonstrating the usefulness of these
tools, the ISA used subjects the students were currently researching
which included the Australian Gold Rush, Eureka Stockade, Bushrangers
and the Chinese in the Australian goldfields.
