Purpose

To introduce or remind Year 7 students of Mackay West State School of the services available to them at Mackay Libraries, with particular reference to online resources.

Scope

As primary school students enter Years 7 and 8, they are beginning to experience higher demands from their teachers in the information they produce for school assignments. They are also beginning to construct bibliographies and understand the significance of referencing. It is important that these students have the skills to determine that their information sources are current, authoritative, and relevant to their information needs.

Program

To this end, the Information Services Assistant visited Mackay West State School and conducted a 45 minute session to each of the four Year 7 classes over two days. (October 30 and 31, 2006). Technical equipment, Internet access PC and data projector, were supplied by MWSS.

During the session the ISA:

Emphasis was placed on Encyclopaedia Britannica Online as it contains information most suitable to this age group and information needs. Other online databases available were mentioned, and detailed further in the Digging into Databases booklet, as future tools as their studies into high school progressed.

To assist in demonstrating the usefulness of these tools, the ISA used subjects the students were currently researching which included the Australian Gold Rush, Eureka Stockade, Bushrangers and the Chinese in the Australian goldfields.
