Public
and School Libraries Promoting Lifelong
Learning

Reading
and Literacy are clearly
closely linked. Literacy is the core business of teachers and co-educators
like Helen Page, Young Peoples’ Librarian from the Mackay Regional Council
Libraries.
Project
GOAL [Grade
Ones At the Library] is where we actively encourage every Grade One student to join their local public library. (This
project was first implemented at the Caboolture Shire Council and feedback
indicates that it was a great success.)
Our basic aim is to
¨
Encourage
as many Grade Ones and Two’s as possible to apply for a Library Card
¨
Promote
the importance of Literacy, especially in the formative years
¨
Demonstrate
the Mackay Regional Council Libraries' commitment to Literacy development
¨
Outline
and promote the services of
the Young People's Section of the Council Libraries.
¨
Publicise
the role of Young Peoples’ Librarian, Helen Page.
¨
Continue
the work of the Productive Partnerships Program
The
mechanics of the GOAL Project are as follows: -
 |
To
promote GOAL through the Newsletter and Parades. |
 |
Early
in Term 1 Library Application cards will be attached to each Newsletter and sent home
|
 |
Completed
forms will be collected, processed and then
returned to students at Mackay West Junior Campus
|
 |
The Young People's
Librarian and Margaret will be present at the Junior School to outline the GOAL
Project to parents and to provide assistance and information
|
 |
A Story time session
will be conducted by Mackay Regional Libraries Staff for those participating
classes
