will need to Update 18th May 2005 (pdf) After a
successful Artist in residence trialed at West in 2004, using artists
Mrs Rosemary Payne and Mr Ken Sanders, we have decided to call upon the
expertise of a dance/ drama/singing artist to work with interested Year
6/7 students in our school production of Wakakirri. Miss
Leisa Foran will be the Artist in residence for 2005. Leisa has
fifteen years of experience in dance, has a Bachelor of Music/Theatre,
and is currently studying Learning Management at CQU and teaches at The
Centre Stage Dance Company here in Mackay. Children
will be offered practical sessions in drama, dance, choreography, team
dynamics and stage direction during Term 2 and 3. Over the term Leisa
and the Wakakirri team will provide sessions covering the core content
from the Dance/ Drama strands of the Arts Syllabus. Wakakirri
Team Dedicated staff from our school make up the Wakakirri team. Fiona Tass
( Coordinator), Maggie Hains, Doug Sturgeon, Anne Usher, Jenny Ritchie,
Emily Brady, Andrea Orr, Cath Parr & Colette Bennett. What
is Wakakirri? Wakakirri
is the name for a ‘story dance’. A story-dance (orientation,
complication, resolution) is told in an imaginative way using music,
dance/movement, acting and dramatic content. Schools will perform
their story-dance on stage in front of an audience of judges, family,
friends and other schools. Workshops Workshops have commenced with the first being held on Thursday 17 March. 75 Year
6/7 students experienced the Arts strand in a workshop presented by our
Artist in residence, Miss Leisa Foran. Children were actively involved
in choreographed movements and expressions shown by Leisa. The theme for
this production was explored and will form the basis of our next
workshop. Performance
Date August
10 & 11- Mackay Entertainment Centre. All rehearsals will be during school, weekend rehearsals will be held on weekends
Wakakirri Results
Our Wakakirri team achieved equal third with three other schools. The team looked fantastic on stage and gave a 100% performance. These students set a wonderful example for the school. A high standard of commitment was shown by all children involved. We are very proud of each and every student for the manner in which they conducted their performance.

Without the help and support of our staff, parents and children, we would never have seen our idea become a reality. Congratulations to our 2005 Wakakirri Team on a job well done!
