Partnership pathways between public and school libraries provide the best opportunity for the development of networked learning communities and the acquisition of lifelong learning skills for all students.

As a result of the work shadowing program we would like to detail  the following initiatives:

  1.   A structure was formalised which continued regular reciprocal visits between the two Libraries.  The Library Monitors visit two branches of the MCCLS each year and the Young People’s Librarian conducts regular workshops for the Library Monitors at the MWSS.

2.      A separate page was set up on the School’s website for the new Outcomes Based Education program which is organised according to year levels and the respective units. Assessment items for each unit have been added to this page enabling access by Staff at the MCCLS who can then provide assistance to students.

3.      Education campaign to cross promote services of school and public libraries.

Ø                    Education Week May 2003, the City Library hosted a Library Monitor Display.

Ø                    June 2003 Claire used elements of this display for Queensland Public Libraries Conference held in Mackay.  This detailed the collaborative relationship, which can be developed between school and public libraries.

Ø                    September 2003, we presented at the Mackay  ‘Excellence Expo in Educational Leadership’, designed to highlight education excellence in State Schools.

Ø                    June/July 2004 we are presenting ‘Productive Partnerships’ at the Biennial SLAQ Conference at the Southport School, Southport.

4.      Parents and the wider community are kept informed of our initiatives and the positive outcomes for lifelong learning skills, via the newsletter and the Website which is updated weekly.

5.      Maintain and/or improve 70% membership of Mackay City Council Library Services.  Through our continued relationship with the MCCLS and the introduction of the GOAL Project (Grade Ones At the Library), we have been able to increase membership to 87%.

6.      We have joined the Libraries for Lifelong Learning Network, which is an initiative of the State Library of Queensland.  We now subscribe to their monthly current awareness bulletin, which flags upcoming events, conferences, interesting websites and professional reading (libll@lists.slq.qld.gov.au).
